Architecture
In the early thirties, intellectuals from many different places visited the island of Ibiza and some even stayed for long periods of time. Some who stood out were the German philosopher Walter Benjamin, the Dadaist artist Raoul Hausmann and a group of architects belonging to the group GATEPAC, among whom were Josep Lluis Sert and Germán Rodriguez Arias, as well as the German Erwin Broner. They were all fascinated by the traditional architecture of Ibiza, whose whiteness, simplicity, functionality and integration into the landscape showed that rationality that was so popular with the first modernist architects.
We offer you a great opportunity to see why they were impressed, by following routes which highlight both beautiful scenery and traditional architecture, and include an actual visit to some of these houses, or the Ethnology Museum, where you will learn all about their origins and
features.
For those interested in modern architecture, we organise a visit to the housing development of Urbanización Can Pep Simó, where we find dwellings designed by Josep Lluis Sert, among other architects. We complete the journey with a visit to the house of the German architect
Erwin Broner in Sa Penya, Ibiza’s old fishing quarter.
Over the last few years, numerous houses and buildings designed by prestigious architects have also been constructed, among which stands out the new apartment building on ibiza town’s Paseo Marítimo by the renowned French architect Jean Nouvel.
